The Two Offices
The Word that Jesus Used
Key Thought: The primary word Jesus and the New Testament use to describe who we are as His followers is “Disciple”. And unlike all the other popular terms used today to describe us, this one is clearly defined with a very precise meaning. Today we will examine this word with one clear action step that we as Christ-followers should be willing to take if we are indeed a disciple.
Disciple (μαθητής, mathētḗs)
a learner, pupil, apprentice. A disciple is one who follows the pattern of the rabbi/teacher they are following, means more than one who listens to a teacher; it implies his acceptance of the teaching
A disciple means being discipled. Jesus discipled disciples in small groups. Thus, being a disciple of Jesus means being discipled in a small group.
- Jesus called his followers to be disciples (Matthew 9:9).
- Jesus commissions us to make more disciples (Matthew 28:19-20).
- Becoming one of Jesus’ disciples will cost you something (Luke 14:26-27).
Application:
- Are you in a small group? Then stay faithful.
- Are you not in a small group? Consider joining one of ours.
- Ours’ are not a good option? Then start one.
