Obedience, Resisting Like Jesus
Obedience, Resisting Like Jesus
Main Verse: Luke 4
The Big Idea
The result of defeating temptation is that we are set up to complete the work that God has called us to do. Jesus’ example in Luke 4 prepared the way not only for His mission, but for our missional work as well.
Introduction to Temptation
– You will be tempted to sin and it is not wrong to be tempted toward sin
– Temptation often comes after a season of victory
– The tempter knows you
– Our ability to overcome temptation is one thing that sets us apart from the animal kingdom
– There is more at stake with each temptation than you may realize, because this is war and we must rebel.
1. Jesus teaches us that we can have a reasonable need and meet that need in an unrighteous way (Luke 4:1-4)
2. Jesus teaches that behind the temptation toward power is a potential change of loyalty (Luke 4:5-8).
3. Jesus confronts the false notion that we can take whatever risks we want and be rescued by God in the end (Luke 4:9-13).
Application
Bring your temptations (both those you have successfully defeated, and those that have defeated you) into Jesus’ presence. Celebrate your wins and confess your failures.
