Helping Others Like Jesus 

 

Serving others sounds easy. But it can also be complicated when the people receiving your kindness could be viewed as enemies or traitors. Jesus sets a high bar for serving others, one that is inspiring but often difficult to reach. His model is this- serving others humbly while disagreeing with them greatly.

John 13:1-16

  1. Jesus had a lot on his mind (13:1)
  2. Jesus had enemies (13:2-3)
  3. Jesus’ foot washing had a two-fold meaning
    1. Jesus does what only he can do- make us clean (13:6-11)
      1. Foot washing by a Jew was extremely rare
      2. Foot washing by a Rabbi was unheard of
    1. Jesus commissions us to do what we can do- to be an example (13:12-18)
      1. Jesus makes a distinction between knowing something and doing something. (v. 16)
