A New Marriage

A New Marriage

Last month, my family celebrated one of life’s great moments as my daughter, Johanna, married the love of her life, Joel. We are overjoyed to welcome Joel into our family and extremely pleased to see how his family has welcomed Johanna. That weekend, both families got to know each other and agreed that Joel and Johanna are a good match, and their love is deep. The ceremony was very moving, and it showcased their faith. I was not the only one with tears in my eyes as they pledged to become husband and wife.

I am proud of my daughter and the life she has built. Joel is now a central part of her life, and I am thrilled. The two bring many strengths to their marriage that will help them create a loving family: both are hardworking, intelligent, and devoted to one another. Neither is perfect, but both are committed to navigating the challenges and adjustments that come with marriage. I believe the two complement one another well and will make each other’s lives more meaningful.

While many couples today choose to live together rather than get married, weddings continue to be a significant milestone. It is no accident that Jesus’ first miracle was at a wedding celebration. When the young couple ran out of wine to serve their guests, a major embarrassment in that society, Jesus turned water into fine wine, thus saving the newlywed’s family from an offensive social misstep.

There were, without doubt, more serious needs in Galilee, so why did Jesus perform this miracle on that day? We are not told, but here is how the Bible summed up the miracle: “This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory.” (John 2:11, NLT)

It showed that Jesus had the power to save the young couple’s wedding day and revealed he was willing to use his power to do so. Jesus demonstrated his commitment to marriage and to the life-changing moment a wedding is for couples and their families.

Jesus did not turn water into wine at Johanna and Joel’s wedding, but I sensed he was pleased with the celebration and the joy of those who attended. Congratulations, Joel and Johanna! I am so proud of you both and honored to have been part of your special day. May God bless these newlyweds as they create a home that both honors him and meets their need to share life with a loving, committed spouse.
